Ordinary Men - Reserve Police Batallion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland (Paperback): Tom Stammers, James Chappel Ordinary Men - Reserve Police Batallion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland (Paperback)
Tom Stammers, James Chappel
R209 Discovery Miles 2 090 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Of all the controversies facing historians today, few are more divisive or more important than the question of how the Holocaust was possible. What led thousands of Germans – many of them middle-aged reservists with, apparently, little Nazi zeal – to willingly commit acts of genocide? Was it ideology? Was there something rotten in the German soul? Or was it – as Christopher Browning argues in this highly influential book – more a matter of conformity, a response to intolerable social and psychological pressure?

Ordinary Men is a microhistory, the detailed study of a single unit in the Nazi killing machine. Browning evaluates a wide range of evidence to seek to explain the actions of the "ordinary men" who made up reserve Police Battalion 101, taking advantage of the wide range of resources prepared in the early 1960s for a proposed war crimes trial. He concludes that his subjects were not "evil;" rather, their actions are best explained by a desire to be part of a team, not to shirk responsibility that would otherwise fall on the shoulders of comrades, and a willingness to obey authority.

Browning's ability to explore the strengths and weaknesses of arguments – both the survivors' and other historians' – is what sets his work apart from other studies that have attempted to get to the root of the motivations for the Holocaust, and it is also what marks Ordinary Men as one of the most important works of its generation.

Riboregulator Design and Analysis (1st ed. 2022): James Chappell, Melissa K. Takahashi Riboregulator Design and Analysis (1st ed. 2022)
James Chappell, Melissa K. Takahashi
R4,529 Discovery Miles 45 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection explores the latest advances in riboregulators, such as RNA-only systems and ribonucleoprotein systems, and provides detailed techniques to study, evolve, and design them. Beginning with a set of chapters focused on the design and application of small RNA (sRNA) regulator systems, the book continues with sections on techniques to create switchable riboregulator systems known as riboswitches, technologies that leverage RNA-guided CRISPR-Cas systems to edit the epigenome, control gene expression, and create diagnostics, as well as computational and experimental techniques to investigate the sequence-structure-function relationship of RNA systems that can both advance fundamental understanding and rational design of riboregulators. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.  Authoritative and practical, Riboregulator Design and Analysis is an ideal guide for scientists and engineers interested in the design and application of riboregulators and driving further innovation in the field.

Catholic Modern - The Challenge of Totalitarianism and the Remaking of the Church (Hardcover): James Chappel Catholic Modern - The Challenge of Totalitarianism and the Remaking of the Church (Hardcover)
James Chappel
R897 Discovery Miles 8 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 1900 the Catholic Church stood staunchly against human rights, religious freedom, and the secular state. According to the Catholic view, modern concepts like these, unleashed by the French Revolution, had been a disaster. Yet by the 1960s, those positions were reversed. How did this happen? Why, and when, did the world’s largest religious organization become modern? James Chappel finds an answer in the shattering experiences of the 1930s. Faced with the rise of Nazism and Communism, European Catholics scrambled to rethink their Church and their faith. Simple opposition to modernity was no longer an option. The question was how to be modern. These were life and death questions, as Catholics struggled to keep Church doors open without compromising their core values. Although many Catholics collaborated with fascism, a few collaborated with Communists in the Resistance. Both strategies required novel approaches to race, sex, the family, the economy, and the state. Catholic Modern tells the story of how these radical ideas emerged in the 1930s and exercised enormous influence after World War II. Most remarkably, a group of modern Catholics planned and led a new political movement called Christian Democracy, which transformed European culture, social policy, and integration. Others emerged as left-wing dissidents, while yet others began to organize around issues of abortion and gay marriage. Catholics had come to accept modernity, but they still disagreed over its proper form. The debates on this question have shaped Europe’s recent past—and will shape its future.
